October brings the annual match against Berkhamsted and the chance to renew old friendships and make new friends. Under glorious March sunshine at the magnificent Royal St George’s, London University Golf Society (LUGs) welcomed their friends—and increasingly familiar foes—from Queen’s University Golf Society (QUGs) on the 20th of March 2026. “The best laid schemes o’ mice an’ men/ Gang aft agley“ wrote Robert Burns in 1785. Some 240 years later, intrepid LUGS, OUGS and Peterites found themselves contending with losing organisers and hosts Stuart and Sarah Lloyd to illness on the morning of the event and contestants had to proceed as a shepherd-less flock. Graciously,Continue reading “LUGS v Old Uppingham v Old St Peters Saturday 7 March 2026 at New Zealand”

On Friday 27th February, the LUGS travelled north to the historic links of Muirfield for our annual fixture against the SUGS, the Scottish Universities Golfing Society. They say the definition of madness is to continue doing the same thing while expecting a different result. So, after ‘Porky’ Kershaw led the LUGS to their worst ever defeat in this fixture last year why, one wonders, did it make sense for him to captain the LUGS in the return game? Because, perhaps, youContinue reading “LUGS v DUGS Friday 20 February 2026 at Sandwich”

For those LUGS that were around back in 1988, there was a sense of déjà vu as we arrived at Sandwich for this fixture. In 1988, the LUGS arrived at Luffness for their first ever outing against a mature society in the SUGS. In 2026, it was LUGS that was the mature society hosting theContinue reading “LUGS v WUGS Friday 6 February 2026 at Sandwich”

Another excellent match against the students led by Zofia Rzeznik, their splendid captain. Huntercombe continues at its charming best; a club that is entirely comfortable in its own skin and now, perhaps, in the best condition it has ever been. As the drama of Rory McIlroy’s march towards the Grand Slam was beginning to unfold at Augusta, what more consequential venue for this match could there be than Portrush, where, in the Summer, the young hero of Holywood will hope to right the wrongs of 2019? The other man attempting to right a wrong onContinue reading “QUGS v LUGS Friday 11 April 2025 at Portrush”

Perhaps it’s something to do with that incomprehensible space-time continuum, but doesn’t time fly these days? It seems like only a year ago when John Dennis, our captain, stood before the match dinner promising a ‘decade of dominance’ by the LUGS. Only 12 months later, that promise, along with his golf game, lies bent andContinue reading “LUGS v SUGS Friday 21 February 2025 at Sandwich”

Fixture debutant, Ian Raisbeck, writes: Purgatory at Portmarnock As I stood on the 15th tee, rental clubs on my shoulder, having suffered a humbling 6&4 defeat, a smile crept over my face—all was not yet lost, I realised. This message, however, may not have reached either British Airways, who couldn’t locate my golf clubs, orContinue reading “DUGS v LUGS Thursday and Friday 30 and 31 January 2025 at Portmarnock GC”
