Quad Match – QUGS v SUGS v DUGS v LUGS Ballyliffin Golf Club 19/20 June 2026

Four years on from the Quad match at Luffness in East Lothian, teams assembled for another magical event at Ballyliffin Golf Club hosted by the QUGS. Michael Curran of the QUGS was an outstanding organizer of the event, played on one of the finest courses in all of Ireland.

The LUGS team was very ably led by Stuart Lloyd with other team members being Alex Modgill, Simon Moffat, Joe Park, Andrew Cole, Peter Dyson, John Kiely, Hugh Smith, Padraig Porter, Rudder Jenkins, Stuart Gough and Matt Wilcox. One or two (very welcome) ringers appear in this list, many of the LUGS regulars having declared themselves unavailable for reasons both plausible and, disappointingly, implausible. Great credit to Stuart for his perseverance in fielding a full team.

And quite why those without good reason chose not to declare themselves available is something of a mystery, for this was a marvellous event played in the best of spirits.

For most, the tour started with a warm up at Royal Portrush – not a bad place to hone a seven iron! Proceeding to the venue, teams were as impressed by Ballyliffin as they had been promised. The event was won by the DUGS on 11 points, with QUGS on 10.5, SUGS on 8.5 and LUGS on 6. While LUGS lost its ‘head to heads’ with the QUGS and DUGS, a highly satisfactory win against the SUGS was recorded.

The last day featured a Texas scramble with each group consisting of one member of each UGS team. Alex Modgill contributed strongly to the winning four which scored a remarkable gross 58!

58 gross; better players than dressers, one supposes!

A great event; and LUGS hope to host the next Quad in Kent in 2030.
