Match result: PUGS won 6½ – 5½
Our resident poet, Prof Tom Fahy has set the encounter to verse
A COMIC BALLAD OF LUGS AND PUGS
Upon the links of St George’s fair, Two teams arrived with skill (and flair!). The LUGS stood tall with clubs in hand, While PUGS had tactics finely planned.
Their captains bold, a fearsome sight – Dyson, the Wizard, prepped for fight! Though battered, bruised, and bandaged tight, He roared, “We’ll win! With brains and might!”
Then Kiki came, that Paris star, With rolling ‘R’s and Guinness jar. A Frenchman? Yes – but hear him speak: His brogue was purest Dublin chic!
The night began with plates piled high, Curry, naan, and pints ran dry. In Sandwich town, the feast was set, As rivals dined without regret.
But lo! The dawn! The wrathful gale! A tempest fit for Jonah’s tale! Did scholars shrink? Nay, brave and stout, They teed it high, then watched balls flout.
The PUGS struck first with cunning play, Their putts went in, the LUGS’ did stray. “We need a boost!” cried Dyson bold, “A tonic rare! Both strong and old!”
So lunch was had (or was it drowned?), With wine and beer in floods profound. And then—a bottle, green and grim, Kümmel, fate’s unholy whim!
Some rose anew with vigour bright, Some simply vanished out of sight. Yet those who braved the gales once more, Did battle hard—one final score!
By single stroke, the PUGS did claim, A win to etch in golfing fame. Yet gimme putts and swings askew, Left Londoners to blame the brew.
The feast that night – oh what a din! A tent near took off in the wind! With speeches grand and toasts so fine, They drank once more (perhaps not wine?).
And so they vowed, with hearts sincere, To meet again another year. For PUGS and LUGS, this battle true, Shall rage once more in twenty-six!
Friday 7th February 2025 morning foursomes:
Jeremy Smith & George Taggart lost to Nicolas Aubert & Ritchy Waller
Sean Dryden & Leopoldo Faganelli lost to Romaro Billong & Armo Valentin
Peter Dyson & Jamie Hudson lost to Juju Montagne & Jean-Phillipe Thieulin
Jonathon Lavelle & Tom Fahy halved with Hammo Svenson & Tim Leonard
John Paddy & Stewart Tucker beat Teddy Lechene & Lemmy Brag
Stuart Lloyd & Mike Edwards lost to Stephan Marletti & Kiki Cahen
We played in a force 7 wind on Friday morning and the afternoon match sheet did not survive the carnage. Stewart, Tom, Jamie and I played at Rye on Saturday and joined the PUGS for lunch before leaving them to drown their sorrows at the River Haven in front of the rugby.
Many thanks to the LUGS team for giving their time for the match and to the St Germain team for travelling to Kent and providing such great company. The match seems to be keeping its legs, and we look forward to a return to Paris next year.
