The third playing of the Triangular at New Zealand GC resulted in a joint LUGS and Old Uppinghamians’ team playing the St Peters Old Pupils. The match is an 8 a side fixture and planned as a three way match. However, due to last minute drop outs and substitutions the format this year was changed with St Peters, losing to the amalgamated strength of the LUGS/OUGS.
Arrival for 9.15 allowed time for a coffee and bacon roll and a catch up with old friends and an opportunity to meet new ones.
Both veterans and freshers enjoyed the fixture. The formal match is played in the morning, in handicap foursomes format. The teams and results were as follows:
| LUGS/OUGS | OPS | ||
| Stuart Lloyd/Rollo Morrissey | 1up | Sarah Lloyd/David Morris | |
| Kaihan Mobed/Henry Ash | James Lloyd/Sam Metcalfe | 2/1 | |
| Iain Raisbeck/Will Barrow | 5/4 | Patrick Copley/Tom Lloyd | |
| Josh Collingwood/Jamie Ridgeon | Halved | Matt Roberts/James Marsden | Halved |
| Leo Fagnelli/Pascoe Morrissey | 4/3 | Tim Pete/Tom Slingsby | |
| Henry Scott/Robert Barrow | 4/3 | Oli Denton/Joe Copley | |
| LUGS/OUGS win by 4.5 to 1.5 | |||
An excellent 3 course carvery lunch followed. The chef remembered the fixture from the previous year and doubled the meat provision. All was consumed along with some special wines.
Casual afternoon golf followed with most choosing to join up with old school or university friends or indeed hybrid games. There was one high level scratch match played between Josh and Iain from LUGS against the a top pair from St Peters – Patrick and Joe. Despite a near flawless round, LUGS were pipped by the St Peters pair. Now at one all in this mini-series it looks as if the decider will come next year!.
Some players arrived and left by train and lifts from West Byfleet were arranged by other players. Those that couldn’t stay were sent home with a packed tea. ‘Looking forward to next year’ was the common refrain. This fixture is close to Sarah and my heart and will continue to be. Flexibility in team numbers makes the fixture fresh and fun.
Next year, the game should be played on 8 March – if you are interested in playing, please let me know and put the date in your diary.
