LUGS v St. Peters v Uppingham Triangular 11 March 2023 – New Zealand Golf Club
In the second edition of a fine fixture arranged by triangular old-boy, Stuart Lloyd, three teams from London University, St. Peters, and Uppingham descended on New Zealand Golf Club to do battle in a contest of three-ways foursomes that is as exciting for the player as it is confusing for the scorer.
There are so many exceptional courses in Surrey more generally and, while some bear the brunt of the public golfer’s attention, New Zealand sits in an oasis of calm despite its proximity to the M25 orbital. Tom Doak once wrote of the course: “If I could airlift the entire club somewhere close to my home, I would be happy to play here the rest of my days.” The understated nature of this marvellous heathland track mirrored the cheery camaraderie in which this fixture was played and the day was a fine success.
Our morning wave got off to conditions that, any who were lucky enough to play against the PUGS on the day prior, felt practically sub-Saharan. The welcoming conditions were nearly matched by how welcome the roast dinner at lunch was met by all in attendance! A fine meal it was, and it provided the perfect prelude to matches in the afternoon of a non-competitive nature as the course was enjoyed again and new friendships were formed.
Then it was back to the clubhouse for a round of sandwiches and more of the Six Nations as our competitors made their way home, no doubt, with the anticipation that this fixture becomes a calendar staple for years to come.
