LUGS were represented by two groups in the Antlers at Royal Mid Surrey. At the children’s table were Matt Wilcox and Kaihan Mobed, alongside the slightly more grownup pairing of Andrew Berryman and Ian Hedley. The first challenge of the day was to turn up at the golf course on time, with train strikes compounded by the sad decline of Uber, the LUGS team had to get creative to make sure they were in the bar nice and early for a Bloody Mary warmup. Although our commutes were tough, it should be noted that Ian Hedley travelled all the way from Sydney for this event, and still managed to be first in the bar!
Then followed a solid morning round of 78 from Hedley and Berryman, who were unable to match the sublime 71 from Mobed and Wilcox. There was some confusion over this score, however, as the dashing young pair had four triple bogeys in a front-nine consisting of 46 strokes. Upon review, it appears that a strong wind had blown the number 1 off the official scoreboard, transforming a modest +21 into a field-leading +2. The aberration was eventually spotted and order restored.
The afternoon round was a tough test for both pairs. A tough, tight, firm golf course, combined with some very generous portions of food and drink over lunch proved a devastating combination. The bottle of sparking wine brought onto the course (and kept cool by a perfectly fitting LUGS headcover) proved the final nail in the coffin for the weary four competitors. Nonetheless, a fine day of foursomes golf was had by all in the true spirit of the LUGS. The team agreed to return again next year and to try even harder to get within 20 shots of the eventual winners. Better luck next time boys!
