LUGS v SUGS Friday 22 October 2021 Royal St George’s
Our long delayed fixture against the SUGS finally took place on a beautiful Autumn day in Kent. Both teams needed to adjust personnel late in the days as Covid raised its ugly head. The last to fall was Alex Modgill who arrived at the club the day before the game only to get pinged as he arrived – an eleven hour round trip for no golf made for a suboptimal day.
Meanwhile, Rudder Jenkins travelled across from New York to play in spite of falling and breaking two ribs earlier in the week. With astonishing fortitude, Rudder grinned and bore it, proving the old adage that one should ‘beware the injured golfer’.
Pairs were announced at the George & Dragon the evening before by means of the usual ‘Sky Sports’ introduction. Again, LUGS started slowly and lunched 4-2 down. The afternoon was looking better until the SUGS dug deep to consolidate their grip on the game. Final scores saw LUGS defeated 7.5 to 4.5.
The club gave the teams a tremendous dinner. After speeches and the award of the ball, Ewan entertained us with ‘a wee deoch an’ doris’ (one for the road in ‘Sassenach’). Our Italian debutants, Leo and Giacomo, responded with a version of the Italian national anthem as rousing as any heard from the Italian rugby team of late.
A terrific day in the latest chapter of this outstanding fixture.
