Berkhamsted v LUGS 16 October 2021 – Match Report

Berkhamsted GC v LUGS, 16 October 2021

As ever, it was a thoroughly enjoyable day at Berkhamsted, played on a course in peak condition with fabulous, true and well-paced greens. The usual LUGS tradition of providing port and brandy at breakfast is always well received; it is fair to say that the LUGS team tucked in with greater gusto than the hosts and perhaps that was the crucial ingredient in our  3 – 1 victory.  Or perhaps it was the “Youth Policy” that made the difference!

The fixture was notable for the Berkhamsted stalwart Gaius Potton (4 Hcp and aged 77) losing in this fixture for the first time since the old king died. Inevitably, the brand of golf played by Lavelle, resplendent in his lobster trousers, was responsible.

Kaihan played magnificently and was round in I under par – a fantastic score particularly on his first visit to Berkhamsted.

It was noted by Bob James that a number of our regulars (Mike Edwards, Porky, Chris Manfield) were absent from this year’s fixture and it was suggested that we field a team of 10 or 12 next year as most Berkhamsted club matches are 12 a side. The date for the 2022 fixture is Saturday 15 October and I look forward to the opportunity of expanding the team.
